August 2022 – WELCOME!
Baseball is in our blood; and the infield dirt, the smell of the grass and the crack of the bat fuel us and drive us to consume more. More time on the field. More equipment. More news and stories. More – well, you get the idea. So, take a few minutes to discover all that’s new in YOUR family. And thanks for your time and patronage of Roy Hobbs Baseball!
AUGUST SPOTLIGHT: Stan Sipka
“Grandpa, just throw strikes,” words of wisdom from Catcher Justin Spicer to batterymate grandfather Stan Sipka in an 18+ game in Akron, Ohio.
Sipka’s memorable accomplishment remembered
Akron’s Stan Sipka did something that any baseball players or fan would love. He played a lot of baseball back in the Summer of 2013. But it is where he played and who he played against at the age of 77 that makes his story so remarkable.

Repeating, the goal is to play 3 games:
Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday mornings, 7-innings games, limiting pitchers to 3 innings each to keep 75s managers happy. Catchers are a must!
NOTES:: 1) RH supplies jerseys & hats; 2) Charge will be $15 a player; 3) 2 managers are set; 4) we will have more information in October.
Jose Caballero | Bruce Doney
Bruce Doney and Jose Caballero are the singular honorees of the 2022 Roy Hobbs Hall of Fame voting.
Doney, of Minnesota, is the Hall of Fame class of 2022. No other candidates received the requisite number of votes for election.
Caballero, of Miami and a Cuban emigre, has been named the Brian Mullen Ambassador of Baseball for 2022.
Both will be introduced during the 4th week of the 2022 RHWS.
1) Please welcome Suzanne Reaves to the Roy Hobbs professional staff. Suzanne, with some 25 years in a similar position with the Fort Myers Miracle/Mussels, joins us as our new bookkeeper.
2) Roy Hobbs will attempt to do the weekly managers’ meeting via ZOOM earlier in the week; those who attend get credit for the Saturday meeting. More details later.
3) Top Golf has become a RHWS sponsor-partner; RH is discussing a proposal to do weekly Thursday (1-3 pm) outings at Top Golf Fort Myers. Cost would be $60 per
person for 2 hours on the range, food and non-alcoholic beverages. We would need at least 48 participants to cover 8 golf bays. It’s quite a unique golf concept, and Top Golf supplies the clubs.
‘My Senior Baseball League Tryout”
In his latest blog entry, Roy Hobbs World Series scribe Glenn Miller tells us about the day he put on his cleats and tried out for the St. Pete Sun Sox of the now defunct Senior Professional Baseball League.
