The Real ‘Field of Dreams’

By Jerry Weaver
This the 4th year of the Shoeless Joe tournament in Dyersville, Iowa at  Field of Dreams (the original movie set).  The Kansas City Knights played against teams from Chicago, Illinois;  Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Racine, Wisconsin.  Previous years teams from St Louis, Missouri also participated.  The pictures were taken from the 60+  Shoeless Joe Tournament held October 4, 5 and 6.  One is of our team and the other is with a Chicago team wearing 1919 uniforms. In the movie Ray Kinsella and Terence Mann went to Boston Red Sox game to see a message on the score board – Boston was playing the Kansas City team that night.

This year there was an additional fund raiser game between a Chicago team of first responders and a New York team of first responders.

In between games the public goes on the field were families can throw around the baseball , run the bases, and walk into and out of the corn field. We gave away Roy Hobbs baseballs to little ones during the three days. Thank you to Roy Hobbs Baseball for loaning us the Knights uniforms.

It truly is a  unique experience. Our first game four years ago was after dark on the dimly lit field, and a combine (with its lights on )was harvesting on other side of the road.  Roy Hobbs would have loved to have come out of the corn field and play ball.
